Creating Rhythm

There is no better way of introducing children to the complexities of creating and playing  rhythm than by  using paper plates & D I Y Boom Bashers -plumbers pipe lagging.  One paper plate constitutes one beat: create crotches, quavers, rests, minims (two cards) or any complexity your ability extends to. Play-a-long to all styles of music, initially with a four card rhythm allowing the children  to experiment and change the rhythms accordingly. Cross rhythms can be created by providing one half on the class with one rhythm and the other half, another. Always allow space for lots of improvisation. It  never ceases to amaze me how inventive some children are. The D I Y  drum sticks are made from ordinary plumbers insulation covers – cut down to size to provide each child with two, soft, indestructible sticks.
